A Maternity Nurse is in charge of the care of a newborn baby and mother in their home. The role of the Maternity Nurse is to join a family immediately after the birth and help the parent(s) adjust to having a baby as effortlessly as possible. A Maternity Nurse is on hand with advice on all matters relating to the wellbeing of mother and baby.
A Maternity Nurse will use her experience and expertise to get your baby into a sleeping and feeding routine. The role of the Maternity Nurse is to help you gain confidence with the baby and she will therefore encourage your participation in developing these routines with the baby.
A Maternity Nurse can advise the mother on breast feeding and expressing, and help the parent develop confidence in taking care of the baby. She is also responsible for all nursery duties relating to the baby. A Maternity Nurse understands that the new addition may have an impact on other siblings in the family and she can also help them to develop a good relationship with the baby.
There are different options regarding the times that a Maternity Nurse can work. These include the following:
24 hours 5/6 days a week
Most families use this option as it gives them the flexibility of having someone on hand whenever they are needed. In this position the Maternity Nurse will live at the family residence and can either have her own bedroom or have the baby in the same room (this is entirely at the discretion of each family and should be discussed with the individual Maternity Murse). The Maternity Nurse will take care of the baby when it wakes and, where the mother breastfeeds, she will take the baby to the mother and be on hand for advice. Where you choose to have someone 24 hours they will need some rest periods and it is customary for them to take some time out to catch up on sleep. This will be done at a time that is convenient to you. The rates for maternity nurses vary but you should expect to pay from £650 - £800 gross for 24 hours 5/6 days per week.
Nights and Days
Should you wish to have a maternity nurse for either nights or days, this can be arranged. The maternity nurse can work 10-12 hours during either the night or the day - whichever suits you best. This option is dependant on the nurse being a reasonable commutable distance from you. The standard rates for this option are £12 - £16 per hour and are dependent on experience.
Multiple Babies
Some Maternity Nurses specialise in caring for more than one baby and they can help parents get into a routine with feeding and caring for them. The rates for this type of care are from £900 gross per week.
